Aims of the Group:
The lines of research of the “Women’s Health” study group deal with health problems that particularly
affect women in the Northeast of Brazil. They aim to determine the principal risk factors for the more
prevalent problems and to draw up strategies for effective treatment and prevention. The group
covers problems to which women are prone throughout their lives, from infancy to the menopause,
including gestation. The more specific interests of the research group include the search for the best
evidence relating to the more prevalent gynecological conditions, with a view to improving care,
including problems relating to sexuality. It also aims to chart the prevalence of abortion and the
factors associated with it, as well as the physical and psychological features these include and issues
relating to contraception and post-abortion. The most common problems that affect women during
gestation and childbirth include hypertension, gestational diabetes and infections, including HIV/AIDS.
Work in this area also helps to protect the fetus. The group also conducts complementary diagnostic
examinations for diseases that are common in pregnancy and those carried out to evaluate the wellbeing of the unborn child and test for congenital abnormalities. In addition, the group studies
problems relating to nutrition throughout a woman’s life-cycle from birth to old-age, with attention to
the peculiarities of each stage in life, including the changes that occur during gestation, which may
lead to a deficiency of micro-nutrients. The overall aim is find solutions to the more prevalent
problems that affect women in the Northeast region, taking due account of its specific social,
economic and cultural features.
