Research Group Title: Stochastic and Statistical Applications in Life Sciences (SSALS) - RGAlentejo-117-1418
Current group composition: 10 integrated PhDs Members: Group Coordinator -Russell Alpizar-Jara
(RAJ), Anabela Afonso (AA), Carlos Braumann (CB), Dulce Gomes (DG), Dulce Pereira (DP), Gonçalo
Jacinto (GJ), Manuel Minhoto (MM), Manuela Oliveira (MO), Paulo Infante (PIS), Patrícia Filipe (PF), 3
Collaborating PhD Members: Ana Cantarinha (AC), João Filipe Monteiro (JM)- Univ. of Brown, USA, and
Georgiy Bobashev (GB)- RTI USA, and 10 PhD Students Collaborating Members: Clara Carlos (CC) who
completed her PhD this year (2013), Manuela Larguinho (MLA) expecting to defend her PhD thesis this
year, Inês Sousa Dias (ID), Fernando Ceia (FC), Nuno Brites (NB), Mafalda Lira (MLI), Sandra Lagarto (SL),
Md. Abdus Salam Akanda (ASA) who is an ERASMUS MUNDUS PhD student at University of Évora and
lecturer from University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, Renata Teixeira (RT) and Manuel do Carmo (MC).
Research of SSALS group focused on Stochastic Processes and Statistical Modelling with Applications to
Life Sciences. New insights and cross-disciplinary research collaboration (projects), supervision of postgraduate students (20 PhD theses underway and also various masters theses), scientific communications
and related activities, organization of scientific activities, international publications, public awareness
dissemination, participation in scientific societies, editorial and refereeing activities, and integration of
international collaborators in group composition are also undergoing. Following previous
recommendations by the Advisory Board members, SSALS group made great efforts focusing on two
main lines of research with specific tasks:
A) Stochastic Processes and Applications
A1) Population and Individual modelling in random environments
A2) Stochastic Processes, Time Series Analysis and Space-time Modelling
B) Statistical Modeling and Data Analysis
B1) Sampling elusive populations and parameter estimation
B2) Multivariate Analysis and Experimental Designs
B3) Quality Control and Survival Analysis
During the period in consideration, the number of group members has increased, involving international
collaborators and more PhD students. Group members are also participating in various collaborative
research projects. This expansion and the proliferating participation in research activities have
necessarily brought new ideas, complementing and strengthening the current lines of research, and
promoting collaboration among group members. In parenthesis we indicate group members
participating in primary activity (but not exclusively) and related work on:
A1) Population and Individual modelling in random environments (CB, PF, CC, SL, NB) in collaboration
with C. Roquete from ICAAM-U.E.

A2) Stochastic Processes, Time Series Analysis and Space-time Modelling (GJ, DG, PF, MLA, CB) in
collaboration with J.C. Dias, ISCAC Business School, Coimbra, and with C. Nunes, ENSP, UNL.
-modelling telecommunication systems, internet traffic analysis with sampling, inversion problems in
queuing theory;
-integer-valued time series models, extreme value theory applications to sports data records;
Modelling tuberculosis control and their determinants, space-time clustering and HIV/AIDS
modelling
